Death #34 of 101

Snore No More

"Silence became the final request."

📍 Harbor Echo Hostel, Sydney, Australia

Death Mechanism

A roommate, pushed past exhaustion, smothers Colin with a pillow to stop his snoring. The act lasts only minutes, but Colin never wakes. The dorm chalks it up to sleep until the bruises are found.

Synopsis

Colin Harris is a cheerful backpacker with a nightly snore that rattles the bunk frames. His roommate, Jade, hasn't slept properly since Manila's stampede story turned her into a jittery insomniac.

The hostel offers earplugs, but Jade's patience is gone. A @HostelReaper note on the bedside light reads "Silence is a choice," but Colin only jokes about it. When the snoring starts again, Jade makes a different choice.

By morning, the dorm is too quiet. The hostel adds a sign about noise, but the damage is already done.

Narrative Excerpt

Harbor Echo was a clean hostel with cheap beds and thin walls. Colin thought it was perfect. He snored like a foghorn and told everyone it was "just how he slept." Jade, in the bunk above him, counted the nights without rest like a debt.

After the stampede in Manila, Jade couldn't stop picturing crowds and alarms. Sleep was her only escape, and Colin kept yanking her out of it. She asked Ben at reception for a room change, but the hostel was full. "Earplugs," Ben said, handing her a packet like a solution.

The bedside light had a sticker with a black scythe: "@HostelReaper: Silence is a choice." Colin chuckled when he saw it. "Guess you're out of luck," he told Jade, and rolled over. The snoring resumed, louder than before.

Jade lay in the dark, eyes open, jaw tight. The room hummed with Colin's breath. She reached for her pillow, pressed it over her ears, and imagined silence. Then she climbed down, placed it over Colin's face, and pushed. The snoring stopped. The room went still.

She held it there longer than she meant to. When she finally pulled back, Colin didn’t stir. His chest didn't rise. Jade stepped away, shaking, and sat on her bunk until dawn.

Ben found Colin at cleanup. The bruises on his face made the story less accidental. The police came. The hostel posted a new sign: "Noise complaints taken seriously." On the bedside light, another line appeared beneath the @HostelReaper note: "Death #34. Silence is a choice."

The next night, the dorm stayed quiet. Too quiet.
