Death #33 of 101

Travel Buddy

"The friendliest hand is sometimes the last one you feel."

📍 Aurora Dock Hostel, Reykjavik, Iceland

Death Mechanism

A travel companion pushes Ava into a geothermal vent on a midnight hike after a long simmering grudge. The fall is short but deadly, and the scalding steam finishes what the shove starts. The hostel calls it an accident until the witness speaks up.

Synopsis

Ava Sinclair and her travel buddy Miles have been on the road for months, the friendship fraying under budget stress and bad decisions. Reykjavik is meant to be a reset, with its calm hostels and northern lights.

Miles suggests a late‑night hike to clear the air, but his version of “clear” is final. A @HostelReaper note on the tour board reads "Betrayal is the cheapest ticket," but Ava only thinks about the Manila stampede. She follows Miles into the cold, unaware she's walking into a trap.

The push is quick, the steam unforgiving, and the friendship ends where the ground opens.

Narrative Excerpt

Aurora Dock Hostel smelled like wet wool and coffee. Ava hoped Reykjavik would reset their trip the way everyone said the city reset people. Miles smiled at check‑in, took the bunks, and suggested they do a late‑night hike to see the lights. Ava wanted to say no. She said yes instead.

The tour board near the lobby had a note taped to it: "@HostelReaper: Betrayal is the cheapest ticket." Ava assumed it was another dark joke from the series. She had just read about the Manila stampede and told herself she was lucky to be somewhere calm and quiet. Betrayal felt too human to be dangerous.

The hike was dark and cold, the path lit by their headlamps and the glow of the city behind them. The ground steamed in places, geothermal vents exhaling a sulfur breath that made the air taste like pennies. Miles walked ahead, silent. Ava trailed, thinking about the months of bickering over budgets and routes and who always carried the heavier bag.

When they reached the vent, Miles stopped. "We need to talk," he said. Ava stepped closer, the warmth of the steam brushing her face. She started to apologize, then felt his hands on her shoulders. The shove was sudden, not a push but a decision.

Ava fell into the vent's edge, the heat scalding her skin, the steam burning her lungs. She screamed once before the sound was swallowed by the night. Miles stood above, breathing hard, watching the steam curl around her. The aurora flickered faintly in the distance, as indifferent as the ground.

He returned to the hostel alone and told Helga that Ava had slipped. The staff called it an accident, another tourist underestimating Iceland. The investigation was brief. The @HostelReaper account posted a photo of the steaming ground: "Death #33. Betrayal is the cheapest ticket." Ava's bed was remade by morning.
