Excerpt

Iron Curtain Hostel smelled like old radios and wet wool, a curated nostalgia. The walls were lined with black-and-white photos and fake surveillance cameras that winked in the dim light. Theo loved it. He had booked the place for its theme and the rumor that "you never know who you’ll share a dorm with." That sounded like adventure to him, not a warning.

On his first night, he went to the kitchen for water and heard voices in the stairwell. They were low, clipped, and practiced. Theo paused, a glass in his hand, and caught words that sounded like numbers. He told himself it was just two people trying to be mysterious. Then he heard his own name, or something that sounded like it. He set the glass down and leaned toward the door.

The stairwell was colder than the hall. The light on the landing flickered. Theo stepped down, curious, because he had always wanted a story bigger than the pub crawl in Bangkok or the mirror in Buenos Aires. He saw two men in coats, one handing a small envelope to the other. They froze when they saw him.

"Sorry," Theo said, lifting his hands, smiling. "Wrong floor."

The taller man’s face didn’t change. The shorter man’s eyes sharpened. They spoke in a language Theo didn’t understand, then the taller man stepped forward. Theo backed up the stairs, heart suddenly loud. He turned and ran.

He burst into the hallway and saw Kasia at the desk. He opened his mouth to tell her, then stopped. She had her phone up, her expression blank. The lights in the hall dimmed. The fire door clicked shut behind him. A sign on the wall read, "Staff Only." He had never noticed it before.

Theo tried the door to the service stairwell and found it unlocked. He pushed inside and felt the air go stale. The door swung shut and latched. He heard footsteps above, then below. He pulled out his phone, but the screen said "No Service." A new notification buzzed through anyway: @HostelReaper — "Some secrets kill the witness."

He climbed downward, two steps at a time, trying to find the exit. The stairwell seemed to fold, each landing identical. He heard a door open and a voice call his name, calm and controlled. He stopped, breath held. The voice came again, closer.

The confrontation was quick. A hand grabbed his shoulder. He spun, slammed into the railing, and felt the world tilt. He fell down three steps and hit the landing hard. The envelope slid across the floor. The men looked at each other, then at him. Theo opened his mouth to protest. He never finished.

By morning, the hostel claimed it had no record of his stay. Mara asked Kasia about the missing traveler and was told there was a glitch in the system. She didn’t believe it, but she didn’t have proof. The stairwell door was locked with a new keypad. The hostel’s reviews mentioned a "strange night," and @HostelReaper replied, "Some stories are filed under classified."
