Excerpt

Laundry Lounge Hostel was a temple to clean clothes. The basement smelled like detergent and warm air. Ben loved it. He was on week six of his trip and had run out of clean shirts twice. The hostel promised free washing, and he took them up on it with enthusiasm.

He dropped his clothes into the industrial dryer, a steel drum large enough to stand in. His lucky cap slipped in at the last second. He hit stop and watched the drum slow. Max laughed and said, "Just climb in." Ben glanced at the safety sticker and ignored it. He opened the door and crawled in.

The dryer was hot and smelled like cotton. Ben grabbed the cap and turned to crawl out. The door clicked shut. He pushed it and felt it latch. The drum shuddered. The auto-cycle kicked in after a power flicker, the one Hana had mentioned earlier when the lights dimmed.

He slammed his fists against the glass, but the machine swallowed the sound. The tumbler rolled him onto his shoulder, then his back. The heat climbed quickly, a dry wall he couldn't breathe through. He tried to curl around the cap as if it could protect him.

Ben banged on the door and shouted. The machine drowned him out with its hum. The drum began to spin, slow at first, then faster. He tried to brace his feet, but the heat and the movement threw him against the walls. The metal was too hot to grip. He screamed until the air was gone.

He thought of the hostel in Madrid where someone had suffocated in a storage room and wondered if this was the same kind of mistake, the kind that looked stupid from the outside and terrifying from the inside. The spinning blurred his thoughts into a single plea: stop.

Upstairs, the hostel playlist kept looping. The dryer cycle timer blinked, then reset. Rei glanced at the security monitor and saw only a blur of spinning steel. She assumed it was empty, just another late-night load.

The bass thumped, steady and oblivious.

It drowned out everything else.

No one heard Ben.

Hana checked the maintenance log and saw a note about the auto-cycle, but it was buried under reminders to restock detergent. When she finally went downstairs, the machine was still running, the timer stuck. She hit stop and felt the door resist as if it wanted to stay shut.

Upstairs, Rei wondered why the laundry cycle was taking so long. Hana checked the panel and saw the machine running. She assumed someone had restarted it. Max, half drunk, told her Ben was in the bathroom. No one went down for another twenty minutes.

When they opened the door, the drum was still warm. The smell in the room had changed. Hana called emergency services and sank to the floor. The hostel put up a sign the next day: "Never enter the machines." @HostelReaper replied on the hostel's update: "Never climb into the machine."
