Excerpt

Skyline Steps Hostel was stacked like a staircase, each level leading to a rooftop view of Kathmandu. The air tasted like incense and exhaust. Nico arrived with insomnia and a backpack full of crystals he had bought in Goa. The hostel brochure promised a rooftop meditation session that would "open your channels." Nico signed up before he had even dropped his bag.

Maya guided the session with a bell and a voice like warm tea. She asked them to close their eyes, to breathe, to step outside themselves. Nico felt the heat of the day release from his shoulders, felt his heartbeat slow. He had read about astral projection in a blog and thought it sounded like a travel hack. Sleep without sleeping. See without moving.

The first tug felt gentle. A sensation like floating in a pool. He opened his eyes and saw his body sitting cross-legged on the rooftop. He laughed, the sound drifting like mist. He rose above the roof and saw the city, the lights, the mountains. The view was breathtaking, a panorama no camera could capture.

Then he heard a whisper. It wasn't Maya's voice. It was low, distant, calling him beyond the temple bells. He drifted toward it, curious. Ruth opened her eyes and saw Nico's body slump. She nudged him. He didn't respond. She looked to Maya, who pressed her palms together and said quietly, "Stay with us." Nico was already gone.

In the astral, Nico floated above the hostel and saw a road that glowed. He followed it, the pull irresistible. It led to a dark valley where shapes moved like smoke. He felt a cold that seeped into his bones, though he had no bones. He tried to turn back and found the road had changed. The hostel was a light behind him, shrinking.

Maya rang the bell, faster, a call back to the bodies on the roof. She watched as everyone opened their eyes except Nico. Kiran brought a blanket and wrapped his body, whispering his name. The bell did not reach him.

Nico wandered a place without landmarks. He saw other travelers, or echoes of them, drifting like kites. A man with a key in his throat. A woman with a mirror for a face. They did not speak. They simply floated, the lost and the late. Nico tried to follow them and found himself farther from the light.

He called for Maya and heard his own voice come back thinner, stretched like a tape loop. He reached for the light and felt it pull away, as if distance was a decision the place made for him. The valley opened into a sky with no stars, and for a moment he wondered if he had gone beyond sleep into something permanent.

By morning, his body was cold. The ambulance took him, but the hospital could not explain why his heart had stopped. Maya lit incense on the roof and asked forgiveness. Kiran posted a note about safe meditation practices. @HostelReaper replied, "Do not drift too far." The message settled on the rooftop like ash.
