Excerpt

Signal & Stone Hostel was a maze of exposed brick and glass, the kind of place that looked like a startup's Pinterest board. Theo loved it. He loved that the floorboards still creaked and that the lobby wall had a photo of the building in 1924, when it was a textile factory. The photo caption said, "Lost to fire, rebuilt with love." Theo read the words twice and felt his curiosity pull tight.

He asked Ines about the fire. She shrugged and said it was long ago, a tragedy in the city archives. Theo nodded, but he kept looking at the photo. At night, he heard a faint crackle, like paper burning. He told himself it was the radiator. He told himself he was tired from travel. He wrote a note in his journal anyway: "Temperature drop at 2:11 a.m., smell of smoke, no source."

Bruno thought it was cool. He offered to help Theo set up sensors. They taped a thermometer to the wall and left a glass of water on the windowsill. At 2:11 a.m. the water shivered, the glass sweating as the room grew warm. Theo smelled smoke in the back of his throat. He opened the window and inhaled cold night air. It tasted like ash.

In the morning, Theo woke with a burn on his forearm, a pink line that looked like a brand. He couldn't explain it. Kira suggested he stop messing with the building. "You read about the hostel that turned people into furniture," she said. "Stop. Go to the beach." Theo laughed. Science didn't fear chairs. Science feared unanswered questions.

The first echo came in a dream. He stood in a factory floor filled with sewing machines. The air was thick, the light flickering. He reached for a door and found it locked. He woke with his heart pounding, the smell of smoke lingering. He checked the calendar and saw the date: March 18, the anniversary of the fire.

On the night of the anniversary, the hostel hosted a fado night. The singers' voices curled around the stairwell like smoke. Theo couldn't sleep. He sat in the dorm and felt his hands heat up, then burn, then numb. He saw the dream again, but this time he was inside it, choking on something he couldn't see. He grabbed for his inhaler and found his hand trembling.

The room in the dream shifted. He heard screams, the slam of doors, the sound of wood cracking. In the real dorm, the walls grew warm. Theo stood and stumbled toward the hallway, not sure which world he was in. He saw a line of black soot creep across the ceiling. He blinked, and it was gone. He breathed in and tasted smoke. He breathed out and felt his chest tighten.

Kira found him on the floor, gasping. She called for help. Bruno poured water on his face. The water hissed as if it hit heat. Theo's eyes went wide, then far away. He whispered, "It's happening again." The last thing he saw was the old photo on the wall, the factory burning, the names of the dead printed beneath. He felt their fear like a memory that wasn't his.

The ambulance arrived too late. Ines stood in the lobby, hands shaking, watching the paramedics carry him out. She later told the staff to remove the old photo. No one did. In the hostel reviews, someone wrote, "I woke up smelling smoke." @HostelReaper replied, "Echoes carry heat."
