"The shots were cheap. The outcome wasn't."
Riley Knox is a party‑first backpacker who believes Bangkok nightlife is a rite of passage. Khao San Karma Hostel runs a nightly pub crawl and hands out a list of shots with prizes for completion.
Riley chases the prize, ignoring water and warnings. A @HostelReaper note on the crawl map reads "Pace is a pulse," but Riley only laughs after hearing about the Cape Town shower death. The night ends with him on the floor and the crawl photos still uploading.
The hostel posts a new rule about limits, but the next night’s crawl is already planned.

The crawl map was laminated and cheerful, a rainbow of bars and checkmarks. Riley shoved it into his pocket like a trophy. "Let's finish the whole thing," he said, and the group cheered. Khao San Karma had turned nightlife into a checklist, and Riley loved lists.
The shots came in quick succession: neon buckets, whiskey chasers, a fermented mystery drink. Riley kept up, laughing, slapping the bar, posting stories. On the map, someone had scribbled a note with a scythe: "@HostelReaper: Pace is a pulse." Riley used it as a joke caption and kept drinking.
By bar five, his words blurred. By bar seven, he could barely stand. Jade kept filming, insisting the stumble would go viral. Somchai counted the wristbands and told himself everyone would make it back.
Riley collapsed in the hostel hallway, face down on the tile. Someone laughed, assuming he was sleeping it off. He rolled onto his side and vomited, then stopped moving. The hallway light flickered, and the rest of the crawl poured into the dorms, still chanting the night’s prizes.
By the time anyone checked on him, his breathing had stopped. The paramedics said alcohol poisoning, aspiration, time. The hostel posted a new rule about limits and taped a warning by the bar: "Pace yourself." Under it, a new line appeared: "Death #41. Pace is a pulse."
The next night, the crawl map was back on the desk.
