Death #38 of 101

Quiet Hours

"The rulebook was thin. The patience was thinner."

📍 Red River Roost, Hanoi, Vietnam

Death Mechanism

After a loud late return, a guest is suffocated with a pillow by an exhausted roommate seeking revenge. Taro is found the next morning, face-down in his bunk. The hostel calls it an accident, but the bruising tells another story.

Synopsis

Taro Fuji loves nightlife and treats quiet hours like suggestions. His roommate, Mina, has been working remote nights and sleeping days, and the noise has become unbearable.

The hostel posts a stern sign and a @HostelReaper note: "Silence is enforced." Taro laughs after hearing about the Belgrade witness murder. Mina doesn't laugh, and when Taro stumbles in at 3 a.m., she decides to enforce it herself.

The act is quick and quiet. The hostel only notices when the bed stays too still.

Narrative Excerpt

Red River Roost was loud even when it tried to be quiet. The walls were thin, the bunks were close, and the "quiet hours" sign was mostly for decoration. Taro stumbled in at 3 a.m., laughing, shoes in one hand, his phone blaring a voice note from the bar.

Mina didn't move. She had been awake for hours, trying to sleep before her next video call with a client in London. She heard Taro trip over a backpack, heard him slam the locker, heard him whisper an apology he didn't mean. She read the @HostelReaper note on the wall: "Silence is enforced." She didn't look away.

Taro fell onto his bunk, snoring within minutes. Mina stared at the ceiling, listening. The noise felt like a drill against her skull. She pressed her earplugs in harder. The snoring grew. When she climbed down, it felt like the only path left.

She took her pillow and laid it over his face. At first, she meant to wake him. He flailed once, then stopped. Mina pushed harder, her hands shaking. The room was silent except for the hum of a ceiling fan and her own breath. The silence lasted.

Quang found Taro at checkout, confused why he hadn't left. The bruises, the stiff stillness, the bruised fabric told the story the hostel didn't want. The police called it manslaughter. The hostel called it a tragedy. On the wall, someone wrote a new line beneath the Reaper note: "Death #38. Silence is enforced." The sign stayed.
