Death #13 of 101

The Spore Settler

"The damp room wanted a tenant forever."

📍 Harbor Drip Hostel, Vancouver, Canada

Death Mechanism

Long-term exposure to toxic mold inflames and scars the lungs. Casey, sleeping in a basement dorm, develops acute respiratory failure after days of breathing spores. The hostel calls it a "cold" until the autopsy says otherwise.

Synopsis

Casey Wu is a budget traveler who prides herself on finding the cheapest beds in expensive cities. Harbor Drip Hostel's basement dorm costs half the price of the upper floors and promises "cool, quiet nights."

The basement is cool because the walls sweat. A @HostelReaper stencil behind the lockers says "Mold remembers," but Casey laughs it off, already distracted by a news post about a chemical reaction in Valencia. She ignores the cough that settles in by the second night.

By the time she realizes the room is poisoning her, her lungs are already flooded. The hostel paints over the mold and adds a dehumidifier, but the story spreads anyway.

Narrative Excerpt

Harbor Drip Hostel promised "rainy city coziness" and Casey believed it. Vancouver had already emptied her wallet with coffee and ferry tickets, so the basement dorm felt like a clever win. The air down there was cool and damp, a smell like wet cardboard and old towels. Casey told herself it was just the harbor.

She hung her jacket over the bed rail and unpacked on a mattress that felt slightly slick, as if it had never fully dried. Devon looked up from his laptop and nodded in that silent hostel way. "Basement's cheap," he said. "Basement's weird." Casey smiled. "Budget travelers have strong lungs," she joked, and swallowed a cough.

The walls had a pattern like camouflage. Up close, it was mold, blooming in blotches behind the paint. Someone had stenciled "@HostelReaper: Mold remembers" near the lockers and then tried to scrub it away. It was still readable if the light hit it right. Casey rolled her eyes and thought about the Valencia cleaning incident she had just read about. At least this room wasn't being bleached to death.

The first night, she woke with a tight chest. The second night, she woke with a wet cough. By the third, she could taste the damp on her tongue. Mira, the manager, assured her it was just "coastal air" and offered a peppermint tea bag. Casey took it and promised herself she'd switch rooms tomorrow, after the farmers market, after the hike, after her budget rebalanced.

The spores didn't wait. They settled in her lungs like dust that refused to be swept. She sat in the common room trying to catch her breath and watched a news clip about a Dublin renovation death on the TV. The hostel's Wi-Fi lagged, stuttering the video, and Casey's breathing began to stutter along with it. Devon noticed her knuckles whitening on the edge of the couch.

She went back to the dorm to lie down. The air felt thicker, like it had weight. She thought about walking upstairs, about asking for help, but her body felt heavy and her throat burned. By the time Devon returned with a cup of water, Casey was curled on her side, eyes half closed, breath shallow. He shouted for Mira and kicked open the door, but the hallway only delivered the same damp smell.

The paramedics said "respiratory failure" and looked at the walls with the same expression they saved for condemned buildings. Mira hired a cleaning crew that week. They sprayed bleach and painted over the stains. The new paint bubbled within days. On the fresh layer, someone wrote, "Death #13. The basement keeps its tenants." The hostel listed the basement beds as "temporarily unavailable" and then reopened them two weeks later.
