"The elevator stopped. The air didn't."
Oliver Finch has a fear of stairs and a talent for finding the worst shortcuts. He chooses Alfama Anchor Hostel because it boasts a "vintage lift" that saves him from the steep Lisbon climb. The lift squeaks, but it works, and Oliver doesn't ask questions.
After a late-night rooftop rumor about a Barcelona fall, he and two other guests cram into the elevator anyway, hoping to beat the line for the dorm. A @HostelReaper sticker inside reads "Doors close. Lungs follow." They laugh, then the lift judders to a stop, and the joke turns into the longest night of their trip.
When the battery finally fails, time thickens. The hostel blames the city's power grid, but the rumor mill adds another entry to the list of hostel deaths. The elevator stays out of service; the stairs fill up fast.

Lisbon's hills were beautiful from a distance. Up close, they felt like a punishment. Oliver chose the elevator the same way he chose discount flights: because the alternative hurt. The lift inside Alfama Anchor Hostel was a narrow box with a wire gate and a button labeled "Maybe." He pressed it anyway.
Rosa squeezed in behind him with a beach tote and a laugh. Jae squeezed in after her, still holding a laptop under one arm. The three of them made eye contact with the handwritten sticker near the ceiling. "@HostelReaper: Doors close. Lungs follow." Rosa gave it a tap. "Dark humor," she said. "It's everywhere now."
The lift shuddered, climbed, and then stopped between floors with a groan. The light flickered once and went dim. The fan in the ceiling clicked off. The silence that followed was immediate and thick, like the air had stepped backward.
"Probably the power," Jae said, more to himself than the others. He checked his phone, which dutifully announced there was no signal. Rosa pressed the emergency button. It blinked red but made no sound. Oliver tried the gate, then the inner door, then both together. They didn't move. His hands came back warm.
Minutes stretched. The heat built slowly, fed by three bodies and a box of stale air. Rosa pulled out a water bottle and took a careful sip. Jae wiped sweat from his neck and tried to call the front desk on a chat app. Oliver counted the gaps between the floors, between his breath. He joked about the Barcelona rooftop fall he had just heard about, but the joke cracked in the humid air.
"Someone will notice," Rosa said. "They always do." She sounded less sure than she had intended. Above them, the hostel bar playlist thumped on. Nobody could hear a knock from inside the shaft. Oliver started to tap anyway, a steady rhythm that became a nervous tic.
The emergency light died. Darkness settled in, heavy and absolute. Jae breathed in quick, shallow gulps. Rosa gripped the water bottle like it was a talisman. Oliver's chest tightened, a slow clamp of panic and oxygen deprivation. The elevator didn't feel small when they entered. It felt infinite now, an entire universe with no exit.
Hours later, the janitor found the elevator stuck when he tried to send the laundry cart down. The door finally opened with a screech, releasing a wave of stale heat. Rosa stumbled out first, blinking. Jae followed, shaky but alive. Oliver didn't move. His body had simply decided it was done with the waiting.
At the front desk, a new note appeared on the check-in clipboard, drawn in black ink: "Death #8. Air is a privilege." Someone circled it twice. The hostel reopened the lift the next week with a fresh coat of paint and no additional fans.
